How the team plays

Shambling Undead is a bash team that never runs out of bodies. Two Mummies at ST 5, AV 10+ with Mighty Blow do the damage, two Wight Blitzers bring Block and Tackle, and Ghoul Runners at MA 7 with Dodge carry the ball. Behind them stand Zombie and Skeleton Linemen at 40,000 gp each: Zombies at MA 4 with AV 9+ and Eye Gouge, Skeletons at MA 5 with AV 8+ and Thick Skull. Every player except the Ghouls has Regeneration.

The team is good at attrition and at holding a cage with Mummies on the corners. It is slow, MA 3 on the Mummies, and ball handling is thin: Ghouls at AG 3+ are the only real carriers, and Wights at PA 5+ are the nearest thing to a passer. Opponents target the Ghouls, the one part of the roster that does not come back. Mummies and Wights do the hurting, Ghouls score, and the linemen take the fouls so nobody expensive has to.

Building a starting roster

Two Mummies (250,000 gp), two Wight Blitzers (190,000 gp), two Ghoul Runners (150,000 gp) and five Zombie Linemen (200,000 gp) make eleven players for 790,000 gp. At 70,000 gp a re-roll, three of them bring the total to exactly 1,000,000 gp. Some coaches swap a Zombie for a Skeleton at the same price when they want MA 5 on a lineman, and some take two re-rolls and a twelfth body instead. Nothing else is needed early: the positionals are all bought, so winnings go on spare linemen.

Advice for newer coaches

Cage with the Mummies on the back corners, where ST 5 stops a blitz, and keep the Ghoul carrier a square clear of any contact. Mark with Zombies and Skeletons; their job is to stand in the way and stand up again. Foul with a lineman whenever a dangerous opponent is down near three of yours, a sent-off Zombie costs 40,000 gp to replace. Avoid moving a Mummy anywhere other than forward: at MA 3, one that drifts wide is out of the game.
