Vampire team roster

The Vampire roster has 5 positions. The cheapest player is the Thrall Lineman at 40,000 gp, the quickest is the Vampire Runner with MA 8, and the strongest is the Vargheist with ST 5. Team re-rolls cost 60,000 gp each.

How the team plays

Vampire is a hybrid team of five good players and a crowd of Thralls who exist to be bitten. Runners at MA 8, AG 2+ and Throwers at ST 4, AG 2+, PA 2+ handle the ball, Blitzers at ST 4 bring Juggernaut, and the Vargheist is a ST 5 Big Guy with Claws and Frenzy. All of them have Hypnotic Gaze, Regeneration and Bloodlust, and Bloodlust is the story: a failed roll forces a bite on an adjacent Thrall Lineman or a turnover. Thralls at 40,000 gp have no skills.

The team is good at anything the vampires do: AG 2+ ball handling, ST 4 blitzes, Hypnotic Gaze on a defender without a block. It is bad at consistency. Bloodlust (2+) on Runners and Throwers fails only on a natural 1, the (3+) version on Blitzers and the Vargheist fails more often, and every failure needs a Thrall in reach. Vampires score, Thralls get bitten and blocked, and the Thrall count is the resource you manage all game.

Building a starting roster

A common start is two Vampire Blitzers (220,000 gp), one Vampire Thrower (110,000 gp), one Vampire Runner (100,000 gp) and seven Thrall Linemen (280,000 gp), eleven players for 710,000 gp. Re-rolls cost 60,000 gp; two bring it to 830,000 gp, and the Vargheist (150,000 gp) fits on top for 980,000 gp and a twelfth body. Coaches who would rather have a fifth vampire skip the Vargheist and take a second Thrower, six Thralls and three re-rolls, for 960,000 gp. A sixth vampire is never on the table; the positionals cap at two each.

Advice for newer coaches

Keep a Thrall adjacent to every vampire before it acts; a Bloodlust failure with no Thrall in reach is a turnover and a dropped ball. Use Hypnotic Gaze on the one defender standing between your carrier and the end zone, since it needs no block dice and the vampire may move first. Let the Thralls take the line of scrimmage. Avoid blitzing with the Vargheist near your own carrier: Frenzy and Bloodlust (3+) together put it in squares you did not plan for.
